Introduction My current area of interest in psychology is that relation between watching anime and high school grades. I think it is an important and interesting area to study because productions of media have enormous impact on our modern world. Also scientist demonstrated that extreme watching tv and extreme using social media have negative effects on school grades. Also I wonder has watching anime impact on school grades? In this paper I am focused on two key concepts. The key concepts are watching anime and high school grades. Firstly I am going to talk about my literature review. Secondly I will explain my research question and purpose of the study. And thirdly, I am going to explain method of my study to illustrate design, participants, procedure and materials. Finally I will discuss the result that I expect from study. Literature Review To have general information on these two concepts, I have made some literature review. The first key concept of my study is watching tv and addiction of some media devices. First study which is I searched about my topic, is made by Bellieni, Fontani, Carradeschi... In 2010. The experiment aimed to measure the distracting effect of television. They made some tests the groups such as auditory vigilance test (AVT), black and white cartoon test and color cartoon test. After the 30 days the groups who watched black and white and color cartoon, made more errors in tests. After this experiment we can say that watching tv decrease our attentional capacity. Also watching TV contains type of animes. Maybe we can contact low attentional capacity and low school grades. Secondly, this study made by Maass, Klopper, Michel. This study search when we use media device such as tv, how can they affect our short term memory and ability to concentrate. They use 117 students in German university. They separated groups, some of them watch low arousal movie or video games, some of them watch high arousal movie or video games. There are no age or sex difference between the experimental conditions. The result showed that people who exposed high arousal media contents showed less effective processing of information and impaired cognitive performance. This article is related my topics because watching anime and watching tv can be similar process in brain. If watching TV gives these results maybe my topic which is watching anime will give the same results. Thirdly, this article is study about effects of video gaming addiction on people. This article's method based on two-wave longitudinal survey. In the two survey contain some questions. For measuring their level of video gaming addiction they use video game addiction scale. According to result we can say that in fourth grade %34 of children had their own television, they plays a video games in 56 min in a day. In ninth grade, adolescents played video games 137 min in a day. I should mention why I choose this article because this article is related to effects of video gaming addiction. I think that watching anime addiction have same features with video gaming addiction. Purpose of the study My research question is that is there any negative relationship between watching anime addiction and high school grades. Firstly i should explain what is the addiction? Addiction is a condition that results when a person ingests a substance (e.g., alcohol, cocaine, nicotine) or engages in an activity (e.g., gambling, sex, shopping) that can be pleasurable but the continued use/act of which becomes compulsive and interferes with ordinary life responsibilities, such as work, relationships, or health. Users may not be aware that their behavior is out of control and causing problems for themselves and others.*I predict from past studies and results that many factors like socio economic status, parental styling, friend are the most effective factors on teenager who have addiction to anime. I hypothesize that there is negative relations between watching anime addiction and high school grades. My study aims to determine negative relations between watching anime and high school grades. Design
I am going to use quantitative study design for my research by scale. After the scales results I will compare the children's high school grades. I will prepare the scale about anime and I try to describe their level of anime addictions.
Participants My target population is high school students. Participants will 200 high school students from public high school in Istanbul. Male and female student number will be equal. Age of participants will be in the range 14-18. Procedure Participant will be conducted through classes. I give information about my study. Also I will give to them likert-scale. According to scales' results I will sequence their school grades. Material Materials of the study are items that will measure to level of watching anime addiction. These item are rated from 1(disagree) to 5(strongly agree). I will use spss for my study. Anticipated Results Firstly I should explain why I chosen this topic. I think that anime addiction problem is increasing day by day in the world especially between young generation and researcher do not give enough emphasize to anime addiction problem. Maybe when they compare game addiction and technology addiction they claim that watching anime is not a big problem. But they should know that many young person do not focus on their works and cannot adopt real world because of animes. To illustrate in Japan, when young person start to watch anime they cannot stop herself or himself. They postpone their all duties also their schools responsibilities. In addition, I really love watching anime. Also watching anime affected my grades in my first year. I got very low grades in exams because of over watching anime. When I cover my personal reasons and societies situation I decided to study on this topic. As the result of my study, I expected that there is a negative relation between watching anime addiction and high school grades. Because when people become addiction something they ignore everything except addiction material. I think that they spend their many time for watching anime because of anime addiction, young person cannot spend enough time their duties and school works. So their school grades will be decreasing day by day. Today, Modern societies are controlled by technology such as internet, television, computer and many people suffer from addiction of technology. I think that the problem of watching anime addiction is included in them. Lastly, I expect that, there will be gender factor, men's possibilities addiction to anime have more possibility.
